Long-Lived Radionuclides in the Environment: The Case of Iodine-129

چکیده

Results are presented from an ongoing project to study the status and behavior of I and I in the environment. I and I abundances were investigated in precipitation, surface and ground waters from Lower Saxony, Germany, and in soil samples from various European locations. From the analysis of I in rain, I annual deposition densities were determined for the time period from 19971999. We conclude that I deposition rates in Switzerland and Germany increased by three orders of magnitude since 1950 and changed just little after 1987. From the analysis of soils, I deposition densities at various places of Europe were determined. Thereby, the I natural equilibrium deposition density as well as that of the fall-out from atmospheric weapon tests was estimated. Elevated I abundances in Ukrainian soils contaminated by Chernobyl fall-out provide a basis for retrospective dosimetry of the radiation exposure due to I. Soil profiles from Germany exhibit the influence of ongoing emissions from European reprocessing plants and demonstrate the complexity of iodine migration. Biospheric I/I ratios in Germany are an order of magnitude lower than in precipitation and . Because of the disequilibrium of iodine isotopes in the different compartments further detailed investigations of the pathways of I through the environment to man are considered necessary.

Background: Breakfast cereal is a nutritious type of food that is widely consumed by various age groups in Kuwait. This study investigates the presence of long-lived gamma emitters in breakfast cereal, and estimates annual effective doses to various age groups. Materials and Methods: Breakfast cereal samples were collected from the Kuwaiti local market. The samples originated from diff...

A review on speciation of iodine-129 in the environmental and biological samples.

As a long-lived beta-emitting radioisotope of iodine, (129)I is produced both naturally and as a result of human nuclear activities. At present time, the main part of (129)I in the environment originates from the human nuclear activity, especially the releases from the spent nuclear fuel reprocessing plants, the (129)I/(127)I ratios have being reached to values of 10(-10) to 10(-4) in the envir...

Impact on marine environment of radioactive releases resulting from the Fukushima-Daiichi nuclear accident

Since several days, radioactive pollution was observed in the marine environment, at varying distances from the Fukushima-Daiichi power station. The main radionuclides regularly found in the sea water are (T = radioactive half-life): iodine 131 (T = 8 days), caesium 137 (T = 30 years), caesium 134 (T = 2.1 years), caesium 136 (T = 13.1 days), tellurium 132 / iodine 132 (T = 78 hours). Others ha...

I and its Application as Environmental Tracer

Iodine-129, the long-lived radioisotope of iodine, occurs naturally, but anthropogenic generated 129 I has dominated the environment in the past 60 years. Due to active chemical and environmental properties of iodine and the enhanced analytical capacity for 129 I measurement, the application of 129 I as an environmental tracer has highly increased in the past 10 years. Neutron activation analys...
